Holes

Holes is my FAVORITE book. I know, it has 50 chapters, but some are less than a page long. I have read this 3, no 4, times each time I think I have finished it in 3 days. I hope you will go and get the book and read itin less than 3 days!

Seires: This is not in a series.
Title: Holes
Author(s): Louis Sacher
Age Level: My brother (who is 9, almost 10) read this, but I would suggest it for 10-16
Target Audience: Mainly boys (probably) BUT after all, it's my favorite book and I'm a girl!
Stars: 5
Violence: 1/4
·       Talks of an outlaw from a long time ago and the woman outlaw killing people
Pages: 233

Main Characters:
      Stanley Yelnats (Caveman)
      Zero (Hector Zeroni)
      X-ray
      Armpit
      Squid
      Magnet
      Zigzag
      Twitch
      Mr. Pendanski
      Mr. Sir
      The Warden

About The Main Characters:
Stanley: The main character in the book. He is a Camp Green Lake    for no reason. The shoes just fell from the sky. And he didn't know who they belong to. How could he know?
Zero (Hector): This kid is not an American (don't ask me I don't       remember). He wants to learn to read and he doesn't like to answer questions.
X-ray: This (obviously) is not his real name (I think it's Theodore). He   seems to be in charge of all the boys.
Armpit, Squid, Magnet, Zigzag, and Twicth: These are not there real names. These are some of the other boys.
Mr. Pendanski: How you prononce this guys name is 3 simple word  said right after the other, 'pen dance key'. He is in charge over all   the boys above.
Mr. Sir: Is pretty much in charge over everybody (except the       Warden).
The Warden: SHE runs the camp. Stanley knows shes looking for something, but what?

What I Think About This Book:
I LOVE Louis Sacher books. Everyone I have read I have enjoyed. But This one espically, is my favorite.
This book has some bachground of Stanley's grandfather, but what I think is REALLY cool is how the whole 2 stories meet together. And everything turns out right at the end.

What It Says In The Cover (Bascically what's on the back of the book):
Stanley Yelnats's family has a history of bad
luck, so he isn't surprised when a miscar-
riage of justice sends him to a boys' juvenile
detention center, Camp Green Lake. There is
no lake- it has been dry for over a hundred
years- and it's hardly a camp: as a punisment,
the boys must each dig a hole a day,
five feet deep, five feet across, in the hard
earth of dried-up lake bed. The warden
claims that this is a pointless labor that bulids char-
acter, but thats a lie. Stanley must try to dig
up the truth

I would recommend this for youth/teens/preteens.

Enjoy

Celou Sudden Shout: Wind River, 1826

Here is another book by Kathleen Duey. I’ll do a full report because I’m not in a hurry.

Series: American Diaries
Book 9 (This is another series that you do not have to read in order): Celou Sudden Shout: Wind River, 1826
Author(s): Kathleen Duey
Age Level: 10+
Target Audience: Girls
Stars: 3
This is not my kind of book.
Violence: 1/2
·       There is some shooting and a talk about a fire that took place during the book in ‘the big village’ that probably killed some of Celou’s family.
Pages: 152

Main Characters:
Celou
Bi’a
Mu’mbic`
Jean-Paul
Crow people
About The Main Characters:
Celou: The Main girl who ends up saving her family after captivity.
Bi’a: Celou’s mother a strong Indian.
Mu’mbic`: Celou’s baby brother.
Jean-Paul: Celou’s foolish little brother.
Crow People: A very bad tribe that always’s has trouble with Celou’s tribe.

What I Think About This Book:
This is another okay book. I would check out a lot more books before I would come to this one.
From The Book:
Where is your man? the Crow was signing.
Not Far, Celou saw her mother sign back. Just over there.
She pointed in the direction of the big camp. One of the Crow laughed a brittle, short sound. He said something in his own language, then made a gesture that Celou knew all too well. Blackfoot.

I would recommend this series of books for youth girls that like history. (I am obviously not a big fan of history, but it’s good if you do)
Enjoy,

Left Behind >The Kids< Facing The Future

Left Behind >The Kids<: Facing the Future

Well on all Left Behind >The Kids< cover it seems there is a different “theme” color for it. This book is orange. Anyway, as you know, Abrielle Lindsay is also reading this series so I decided I would try it, and know we are trying to figure out how we are supposed to read this series, AT THE SAME TIME, when the library we have only has one copy of each book (except for 1 & 2 but we're done with those already)!!! So I finished book four and since it would be better if I wrote a report for book 4 because I had to skip ¼ of book 3 because of violence, Abrielle Lindsay will do one on book 3. Ok, if you’-re confused at this point so am I. So I will sum this up quickly I skipped ¼ of book 3 becauseofviolence. And here it is if you can't read that: I skipped ¼ of book 3 because of violence. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Pet Trouble: Bad to the Bone Boxer

I JUST started reading this series after both Amanda and Adelaide recommend this series. Apparently I was too crazy to realize that this series in an order, but, come on, it didn’t say a number on any of the sides so how could I know? Anyway if you don’t know, I am a HUGE dog lover. I want to have over 10 dogs (not to mention in the house) when I grow up. I know I’m a little weird. And this series is stuff that could happen but is super funny in really odd ways. I actually DID laugh out loud quite a few times. Just proves how weird I am. So anyway to the book review!

Series: Pet Trouble
Book 7 (don’t worry I don’t read these in order at all, after this one I read the 8th book!): Bad to the Bone Boxer
Author(s): T.T. Sutherland
Age Level: 10-14
Target Audience: This one, hmmm, probably girls, but not all of the series feature the main characters are girls some are boys.
Stars: 4½
·       Even though I enjoyed this book so much I like a lot of books more
Violence: 1/8
·       There is a fight in here where two girls are yelling at each other and insulting the other
Pages: 156

Main Characters:
Michelle
Tombo
Deandre
Midori
Satoshi
Rosie
Pippa
Buttons
Mom and Dad

About the Main Characters:
Michelle: This is the girl that tells the story. She wears her hair up in all different colors of scarves, her room is a mess, and just wants her best friend back.
Tombo: Michelle’s new boxer, who is the cutest dog ever. Even though he’s only about a year old, he’s a WHOLE lot to handle.
Deandre: He is Michelle’s older brother who is in high school (BTW, Michelle is in 5th). He knows how to figure things out.
Midori: Midori is a Japanese girl who is smart enough to have skipped all of elementary school. Everyone thinks she’s just boy crazy because she always is hanging out with her twin brother and his friends.
Satoshi: This boy is Midori’s twin brother who wants the best for his sister. He’s very nice (unlike most boys I know ;)).
Rosie: Michelle’s ‘best friend’ who says ‘like’ a lot and is like every 5th grade girl. She seems to ditch Michelle and just wants to be around Pippa.
Pippa: This girl is very shy and quiet. She has long blonde hair. And she basically agrees with anything you say.
Buttons: Rosie’s adorable little poodle puppy. Who likes to play with any dog.
Mom and Dad: Michelle and Deandre’s mom and dad who are both psychologists.

What I think About This Book:
This book (like almost all the others I do) is FILLED TO THE RIM with fun, humor, and some trouble.
The trouble IS: Tombo. He’s cute, but that doesn’t mean he’s trouble. He’s chewing EVERYTHING (almost).
Fun: Everything in this book pretty much is fun.
Humor: EVERYTHING is funny. I laughed out loud several times ( like, for real ;) )

From The Book:
Plus, the dog’s whole face radiated how much he wanted to be loved. I was good at loving things. I was sure I could make him happy.
Behind him in the cage was a strange mess. Bits of white fluff were scattered from one wall to the other next to the remains of disemboweled toys. His dog bed looked like it had been nibbled around the edges. His metal water bowl was upside down in a puddle in the middle of the floor.
Of course, I didn’t recognize the warning signs at the time. I didn’t even think about them until later. All I noticed right then were the dog’s big, hopeful brown eyes.

I would recommend this book for any dog lover. Or anyone who has chewy trouble with her/his dog. (this is a good book series for 4th-maybe 8th grade)

Enjoy,

Socks

I absolutely LOVE Beverly Cleary books! They are funny, troublesome, and fun! It just seems IMPOSSIBLE not to love these! And we now have a cat, his names is Socks! Well, he looks like he has torn socks actually.

There is no series as far as I know.

Title: Socks

Author(s): Beverly Cleary

Age Level: 8-adult

Target Audience: Anyone

Stars: 5

Violence: none

Pages: 139

Main Characters:

Socks

Marilyn Bricker

Bill Bricker

Charles William Bricker

Mrs. Risley

Nana

Debbie

George

About the Main Characters:

Socks- A gray tabby cat that looks as if he is wearing socks.

Marilyn Bricker- A woman who loves Socks with all her heart.

Bill Bricker- Marilyn’s husband who also loves Socks.

Charles William Bricker- Marilyn and Bill’s baby who is born later on in the book and then seems to get all the love and attention.

Mrs. Risley- A babysitter who checks on Charles every now and then but absolutely LOVES Socks.

Nana- Bill’s mother who doesn’t approve of Socks near the baby at all.

Debbie and George- The kids who owned the cat that gave birth to the litter which Socks was in. They are only in the beginning of the book.

What I think about This Book:

I think I explained what I think about this book at the top but I’ll give a little more information.

This book shows that a pet needs attention and love no matter how busy you are. And it shows that a pet could keep at it and try to get you to… re-love itself.

Socks clearly says this and I totally LOVE animals, I think it is horrible to treat any animal like this, no matter what.

On The Back:

Watch out, Socks!
Socks is one very happy cat, He
lives a good life with his nice
young owners, Mr. and Mrs.
Bricker- they play with him, feed
him, and always welcome him
with love into their warm laps.\
Then a new baby arrives. Suddenly
little Charles William is getting all
the Brickers’ attention! Socks feels left out- and to
show it he starts getting into all sorts of trouble!
What will it take to make Socks realize just how
much the Brickers care for him?

I would recommend this book to any cat lover. Young or old.

Enjoy,

Left Behind >The Kids<: Second Chance

Here I am back for more to do with Left Behind >The Kids<. Hope you enjoy!

Series: Left Behind >The Kids<
Book 2: Second Chance
Authors: Jerry B. Jenkins & Tim LaHaye
Age Level: 9 & up
Stars: 4½
·         This book is great, but most of the others are better.
Violence: none
Pages: 141
Main Characters:
Judd Thompson Jr.
Vikki Byrne
Lionel Washington
Ryan Daley
Bruce Barnes

What I think about this book:
I think this book wasn’t as great as the first one, but the best part is them becoming Christians (I just gave it away didn’t I? Sorry).
But they all go through sadness as they miss their family and realize they have become orphans over night.
Ryan is becoming scared of things (who wouldn’t?) that he never would have been very scared of. He’s hearing things. The authors have you hanging on only to find out there was nothing.
I thought it wasn’t as gripping as the first one but I still enjoyed it and I hope, if you read it, you will enjoy it too! ;)

From The Book:
Judd: “As for me,” he said, “I finally realized I was being stubborn and stupid to put off doing something I should have done years ago.”
When Bruce realized what Judd was saying, he immediately stood and leaned down to embrace him. Judd felt awkward and embarrassed. His dad had not been much for hugging, especially after Judd turned twelve, but he was still glad Bruce seemed so genuinely happy for him. Bruce was on the verge of tears when he said, “Lionel and I welcome you to the family. We’re all brothers in Christ.”
Vikki: Fighting a sob in her own throat, she prayed silently. “God,” she said, “I don’t even know how to talk to you, let alone what to say. Bruce Barnes said you loved us and cared about us and didn’t want to leave us behind. I hope that’s true because I want to believe in you. I’m sorry for having been bad person, and I’m sorry that it took something like this to make me come to you. I wish I could say I would have done this eventually anyway, but I can’t.  I had enough chances, but I didn’t want to give you my life. If you can forgive me for that and still accept me, you can have whatever is left of my life. For a long time I hoped you weren’t real and that I wouldn’t have to answer to you someday, but I always knew down deep you were there. And if nothing else convinced me, this mess sure has. I know it can’t be as good to believe now when I have no choice, but if you’ll accept me, I will live for you for as long as you let me stay alive.”
Lionel:  “You better believe I already prayed the prayer,” Lionel said.”If that’s what you mean. I told God I was sorry, begged for forgiveness, and asked him to save me once and for all. You’re saying it’s not too late?”
“That’s what I’m saying. Welcome to the family.” Bruce said.
Ryan:  “Fair enough,” Bruce said. “No one’s going to pressure you. You can be a part of this group as long as you want, regardless of what you decide to do. When you’re ready, you make this decision on your own.”
Finally Ryan spoke. “And what if my answer is no?”
Bruce said, “Nobody can make the decision for you. You have to live with the consequences.”
“Or die with them,” Lionel said.

As I said in the last Left Behind post, I would still recommend this for youth who don’t understand the rapture yet or don’t even know about. I’ve learned a lot and I’m sure you can too.

Enjoy,
  Abrielle Lindsay

Left Behind >The Kids<: The Vanishings

Some of you have probably heard of Left Behind (the adult version). Me? I had never heard of it ‘til my mom made me start reading it. I fell in love with it. Ok, wait; let me get this straight, I read the kid version. But they are awesome. If you don’t know what Left Behind is it’s a series of books about what two pastors’ think will happen when Jesus comes back after they have studied Revelation. Right now I’m in the 15th book, but I have started reading the series again so I can get updated. Which is a perfect time!! BTW, I am still reading through the book series, I’m not stopping.
Series: Left Behind >The Kids<
Book 1: The Vanishings
Authors: Jerry B. Jenkins & Tim LaHaye
Age Level: 9 & up
Stars: 5
Violence: none
Pages: 146
Main Characters:
Judd Thompson Jr.
Vikki Byrne
Lionel Washington
Ryan Daley

What I think about this book:
It’s a very interesting book. But the kids are very stubborn. Judd yells at his parents and sibs. Vikki drinks and smokes (only for a second in the bookJ). Lionel is a liar, and to me seems kinda’ proud about being a rich black kid. And then there’s Ryan. Ryan won’t listen to his best friend, Raymie.
Out of all the books that I have read this one is the least scary.
The kids could do some work on listening. But they all seem to know what happened when they find the clothing lying around.
Jesus has come for his followers.
The ones that did disappear are more than lucky could ever mean to be before Jesus.
About the kids:
Ryan is not from a Christian family. Judd and Lionel’s families that have been Christians forever and that were very Christ like. Vikki’s parents we’re drinkers and smokers. Her mom was a Christian, that’s how she grew up, but didn’t live or do anything for Christ. Her dad said it was mumbo jumbo.

Judd’s mom, dad, little sister, and little brother had all gone to church loved it etc. Judd used to enjoy it, but then he thought he had grown out of it. He thought loving Jesus and God were for little kids and old ladies. Nobody wanted to dress like he did, listen to his kind of music, or have a little fun. So his family had always been a Christen family, well, besides him.

The Byrne’s live in a trailer park where mostly drinkers and poor people live.  Some of the people were Christians. Every Friday night, men and women would gather ‘round. They would drink, smoke and fight over their wives and girlfriends (it doesn’t have any of this happening; it just says this is what they did). But one night, a pastor came and stood on the stage for 5 minutes and told them about accepting Christ. Mr., Mrs., and Jeanni Byrne all did this that night while Vikki had disappeared to go drink and to smoke.

Lionel’s mom was a true Christian. She loved the LORD more than anything! So did Lionel’s sister, Clarice. She would stay up for a long time reading the Bible and prayin’. Their father loved the LORD as well. Lionel’s little brother and sister were Christians too. But Lionel and his Uncle Andre` shared a secret. Neither were Christians. The Washington family was a long line of Christians.

Ryan’s parents were not Christians. His friend, Raymie Steele, has a “religious” mother. Who hasn’t accepted Christ, but makes them pray before they eat, tell them Bible stories, and makes Raymie pray before going to bed. Then Raymie and his mother start going to a new church. And, BOOM, Raymie and his mother are Christians. Raymie tries to tell Ryan, but Ryan doesn’t want to hear about it.

From The Book:
Judd: Judd was afraid too, but he wasn’t puzzled. As the pilot came over the intercom, pleading for people to remain calm, the full realization of what had happened hit Judd. He didn’t know how many other people on the plane had any idea, but he sure did. Christ had come as he promised and raptured his church..... He, and most of the passengers on that plane, had been left behind.
Vikki: And suddenly it hit her. Was it possible? Could it be? Had they been right? Had she been as stubborn and stupid as a person could be? Had she seen the dramatic changes in their lives and still not believed any of the God stuff? Had they gone to heaven and left her behind?
Lionel: Only for the briefest instant did Lionel wonder if he was dreaming. He knew better. This was real. This was the truth. All doubt and question had disappeared. His family had been raptured as his church, his pastor, and his parents had taught. And he had been left behind.
Ryan: Was it possible that the people who had believed in Jesus had been taken to heaven, just as Raymie had tried to tell him? He and his parents and Captain Steele had been left behind.

I would totally recommend this book series for youth who don’t understand about the rapture. I mean, I have learned a lot about what will happen. I even read all of Revelation to see if all of this was in the Bible. And it pretty much is! So go get it and read it! I just finally got my younger brother to read it. And he loves it!

Enjoy,
